YouTube is a video sharing platform based in San Bruno, California. The service was created in February 2005 by three former PayPal employees – Chad Hurley, Steve Chen and Jawed Karim.

Google bought the site for US$ 1.65 billion in November 2006; YouTube has been a subsidiary of Google ever since. Time magazine (November 13, 2006) named YouTube the invention of the year, among other reasons, for "creating a new way to entertain, educate and inspire millions of people like never before."

In 2010, on the fifth anniversary of YouTube, it was reported that the site's owners were not profitable until then.
